I’m writing a short story to illustrate Supply and Demand, and I thought that baseball card collecting would fit the tone perfectly, going back to an earlier, simpler era. Unfortunately, I know squat about baseball now, let alone in the period I’d like to portray: the 1940s.

I’d like some help finding information about the big names in baseball in the 1940s - their names, teams and positions - as well as a few less famous players who weren’t as exciting. Is there a site somewhere that would help me? Or could someone suggest a dozen players (with a note to show which ones were famous)?

I would be grateful for any help. I try not to write about things I know little about, but this story just begged to be written…
